Like high blood pressure and high blood sugar levels, high levels of LDL cholesterol are recognized as symptoms of imbalance in the system. Naturopaths recognize that the whole system and not just the symptoms should be treated.

Research has demonstrated that a combination of natural remedies, regular exercise and dietary changes can make a significant difference to LDL levels and reduce or even eliminate the need for prescription drugs

Cholesterol-Lowering Drugs

Various medications can lower blood cholesterol levels. They may be prescribed individually or in combination with other drugs. Some of the common types of cholesterol-lowering drugs include statins, resins and nicotinic acid (niacin*), gemfibrozil and clofibrate.

Clofibrate (Atromid-S)
This drug raises the HDL cholesterol levels and lowers triglyceride levels.

Gemfibrozil (Lopid)
This drug raises HDL cholesterol levels.

Nicotinic Acid*
This drug works in the liver by affecting the production of blood fats. It's used to lower triglycerides and LDL cholesterol, and raise HDL ("good") cholesterol.

Resins
Resins are also called bile acid-binding drugs. They work in the intestines by promoting increased disposal of cholesterol. There are three kinds of medications in this class:

Cholestyramine (Questran, Prevalite, Lo-Cholest):  Questran is an anion-exchange resin used to lower blood cholesterol levels.

Colestipol (Colestid)

Colesevelam (WelChol)

Statins
Statin drugs are very effective for lowering LDL ("bad") cholesterol levels and have few immediate short-term side effects. They interrupt the formation of cholesterol from the circulating blood.

FENOLIP ( Fenofibrate , Generic Tricor)
Uses: The uses of FENOLIP ( Fenofibrate , Generic Tricor ) include:
TriCor, in addition to appropriate diet, is used to treat adults with high cholesterol, with or without elevated triglycerides (Fredrickson types IIa and IIb). TriCor reduces elevated LDL-C ("bad" cholesterol), total cholesterol, triglycerides and apolipoprotein B, and increases HDL-C ("good" cholesterol).

Fluvastatin (Lescol):
Lescol is an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (also known as a "statin") used in combination with a low-cholesterol and low-fat diet to lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels and to raise good cholesterol (HDL) levels in your blood. Lescol is not a cure for high cholesterol, but may help to control it. Lescol may also be used in certain patients to reduce the risk of blood vessel blockage. Lescol may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Lipitor (Atorvastatin) is an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (also known as a "statin") used in combination with a low-cholesterol and low-fat diet to lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels and to raise good cholesterol (HDL) levels in your blood. Lipitor may also be used in certain adolescent patients, age 10 to 17 years, who have a genetically caused cholesterol problem. Lipitor is not a cure for high cholesterol, but may help to control it. Lipitor may also be used in certain patients to reduce the risk of heart attack, blood vessel blockage, or chest pain. Lipitor may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Lopid  is a lipid-regulating agent used to lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels in your blood.

Lovastatin (Mevacor):
Mevacor is an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (also known as a "statin") used in combination with a low-cholesterol and low-fat diet to lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels in your blood. Mevacor may also be used in certain adolescent patients, age 10 to 17 years, who have a genetically caused cholesterol problem. Mevacor is not a cure for high cholesterol, but may help to control it. Mevacor may also be used in certain patients to reduce the risk of heart attack, blood vessel blockage, or chest pain. Mevacor may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Pravastatin (Pravachol)
is an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (also known as a "statin") used in combination with a low-cholesterol and low-fat diet to lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels and to raise good cholesterol (HDL) levels in your blood. Pravachol may also be used in certain children and adolescents over 8 years of age who have a genetically caused cholesterol problem. Pravachol is not a cure for high cholesterol, but may help to control it. Pravachol may also be used in certain patients to reduce the risk of heart attack, blood vessel blockage, stroke, or death due to heart disease. Pravachol may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Rosuvastatin Calcium (Crestor)

Simvastatin (Zocor):
Zocor is an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor or "statin" used in combination with a low-cholesterol and low-fat diet to lower cholesterol (LDL) and triglyceride levels and to raise good cholesterol (HDL) levels in your blood. Zocor may also be used in certain adolescent patients, age 10 to 17 years, who have a genetically caused cholesterol problem. Zocor is not a cure for high cholesterol, but may help to control it. Zocor may also be used in certain patients to reduce the risk of blood vessel blockage, heart attack, stroke, and death due to heart disease. Zocor may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Startstat (Simvastatin, Generic Zocor)
Uses: The uses of STARTSTAT ( Simvastatin , Generic Zocor ) include:
Startstat (Generic Zocor) helps to lower high cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Startstat (Generic Zocor) is used in people who have coronary heart disease (CHD) or who are at high risk of CHD (for example, if they have diabetes, a history of stroke, or other blood vessel disease).

*Niacin (nicotinic acid) comes in prescription form and as "dietary supplements." Dietary supplement niacin is not regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) the same way that prescription niacin is. It may contain widely variable amounts of niacin — from none to much more than the label states. The amount of niacin may even vary from lot to lot of the same brand.

Dietary supplement niacin must not be used as a substitute for prescription niacin. It should not be used for lowering cholesterol because of potential very serious side effects.
