Skin health life extension

Skin is the largest organ of the human body, weighing approximately 10 pounds and covering an area of about 16 square feet. We generally take skin for granted and tend not to take very good care of it. Our skin is responsible for protecting our internal organs from the toxic external world. Our skin protects us from heat, cold, and physical injuries. It also provides us with sensory information about the nature of the external world and is our first defense against invasion by bacteria, viruses, and other toxic elements. The skin is also an excretory organ, removing toxins from the body via perspiration.

Aging and Your Skin;

Products That Can Help

Starting to wrinkle will depend on several factors.  Genetics or what does your parent’s skin look like?  When you go out in the sun and whether or not you use sunscreen, your diet; eating fresh fruits and vegetables & protein will help your face stay younger longer.

The two components of skin tissue are collagen and elastin.  They provide the firmness and elasticity making your skin appear smooth and youthful.  Slowing the process of aging is possible, but you must take care of yourself.  In some instances you can reverse aging.  But, prevention is the best alternative.

Sun is the number one culprit for skin aging which includes brown spots and wrinkles.  A minimum SPF of 30 is ok, but SPF 85 can offer more protection especially if you are outdoors quite a bit.  At least protect your face with an SPF 85 or above.  Even driving in the car can prematurely age the left side of your face and arm.  This condition is now known as left side skin cancer.

Vitamins such as vitamin A or Retinol build collagen inside the skin.  Originally used for acne it was discovered to reduce wrinkles.  Vitamin C in many skin serums work as an antioxidant as does Vitamin E which plays a roll in controlling inflammation.

AHAs or alpha hydroxy acids will smooth fine lines and wrinkles and was one of the first “acids” on the market to be used in cosmetics.  Alpha Hydrox AHA Enhanced Creme, Anti-Wrinkle Exfoliant brand has a high amount of AHA, 10 to 12 percent.  Another acid, glycolic acid, triggers collagen to plump cells.  It is used for wrinkles and acne and is in many cosmetic products.

Copper peptides can firm skin, reduce lines and wrinkles.  Stri-Vectin SD® contains this ingredient and the results obtained without painful injections.  Originally used for stretch marks it is now used for wrinkles!

Green Tea Extract - Green tea is well known for its anti-inflammatory properties.  It can reduce the appearance of puffiness, wrinkles, fine lines and large pores. Green Tea is found in the Dr. Brandt skin care line.

SkinMedica TNS Recovery Complex. This intense gel enhances skin texture, reduces the appearance of age spots and blotchiness and improves skin elasticity.

If immediate results is what you seek, you will have to undergo surgical cosmetic procedures. Laser treatments, BOTOX or dermal injections and dermabrasion are the fastest, but they are all painful, and not without complications, besides being costly.

How Skin Care and Acne Drugs and Treatments Work

Information about Accutane (Isotroin) Information about Contractubex
Most Common Uses
Treats Cystic acne, Severe acne that has not responded to treatment with oral antibiotics

This medicine is a retinoid used to treat severe acne that has not improved with other available treatment

How does Accutane work?

Isotroin (Isotretinoin, Accutane) belongs to a group of medicines known as retinoids, which are derivatives of vitamin A. It works by reducing the production of the skins natural oil (sebum). Acne occurs due to an excessive production of sebum from over-active sebaceous glands in the skin. The sebum blocks the sebaceous glands, which prevents the oil from flowing freely out and causes an accumulation of sebum under the skin. The bacteria associated with acne thrive in these conditions. They feed on the sebum, and produce waste products and fatty acids that irritate the sebaceous glands, making them inflamed and causing spots. Isotroin (Isotretinoin, Accutane) decreases the size and activity of the sebaceous glands in the skin, which reduces the amount of sebum that is produced. This stops the glands becoming blocked

Comedonal Acne

Comedonal acne is characterized by the presence of whiteheads and blackheads. There are certain topical medications that are geared towards the treatment of these blemishes specifically. For instance, topical tretinoin (Retin-A) has long been considered the standard of treatment for comedones or whiteheads and blackheads. Recently, however, some newer topical medicines have been developed to attack these symptoms.

Nodulocystic Acne

Nodulocystic acne is characterized by large, tender, red, and purple acne "bumps" or cysts under the skin. It can be quite severe, disfiguring and emotionally upsetting. Often this form of acne will not respond to traditional topical treatments nor traditional antibiotics. It is in these severe cases, that systemic isotretinoin becomes the treatment of choice. It is quite effective most of the time. It requires monitoring by a dermatologist skilled in using this medication.

Everyone wants smooth, blemish-free skin, and the emotional impact of acne, especially on young girls, can be devastating. It's important to react, but not overreact. Don't do permanent damage to skin by picking at it. Keep your skin clean. See a professional if you feel any medication is warranted. And have patience, as only time will cure acne permanently.

Pustular Acne

Pustular acne appears just how it sounds. The presence of small pustules or tiny red pimples characterizes this form of acne. One recommended treatment is Acne Lotion. The best approach to this form of acne depends on the severity. If it is mild, often over the counter Benzoyl peroxide lotions or washes may be effective. In severe cases, benzoyl peroxide washes may not be enough, and topical antibiotics may be prescribed. Topical erythromycin gel 2% is a traditional approach, though there are many new topical medicines that are quite effective. Still, Pustular acne may be so severe that topical medicines need to be used in conjunction with oral medications. Classically, oral tetracycline has been used to treat acne, but tetracycline has been found to cause side effects, many of them quite serious. There are many newer oral antibiotics that your dermatologist can recommend. For very severe acne, systemic isotretinoin has become the treatment of choice. This medicine is very effective at treating resistant cases as well as severe cases of Pustular and Comedonal acne. This medication requires careful monitoring by a skilled dermatologist.

Myths About Acne according to the American Academy of Dermatology:
  1. Misconception: Poor hygiene causes acne.
Acne is not a result of dirt or surface skin oils. Vigorous washing and scrubbing will irritate the skin and only make acne worse. The best approach is to gently wash your face twice a day with a mild soap, pat dry and use an appropriate acne treatment.
  2. Misconception: Diet causes acne.
Studies haven't found a connection between diet and acne, so eating chocolate, french fries or pizza won't cause acne or make it worse.
  3. Misconception: Stress causes acne.
The ordinary stress of day-to-day living is not an important factor in acne, but severe stress that needs medical attention sometimes is treated with drugs that can cause acne. If you think you may have acne related to a drug
prescribed for stress or depression, consult your physician.
  4. Misconception: You have to let acne run its course.
Acne can be cleared up. If the acne products you've tried haven't worked, see a dermatologist.
